Acute Athletic Injuries

Acute injuries respond well to low intensity laser treatment. It is important to contact the clinic immediately following an injury to ensure a timely treatment plan and return to activity schedule.

Muscles, Tendons and Ligaments

Strains

Stretches, pulls or tears of muscles and/or tendons. They are usually caused by overexertion (for example, when several muscles hurt after a strenuous practice, athletic game or long hike). The usual cause of muscle strain is forceful contraction, (tightening) of the muscle during an activity. For example, it might happen when you run, jump, throw, or lift a heavy object.

Sprain

An injury that causes a stretch or a tear in a ligament. Ligaments are strong bands of tissue that connect bones at a joint. Sprains can be classified as mild or severe, depending on the amount of ligament damage, or may be graded I, II, or III depending on their severity:

  • grade I sprain: pain with minimal damage to the ligaments
  • grade II sprain: more ligament damage and mild looseness of the joint
  • grade III sprain:complete tearing of the ligament and the joint is very loose or unstable.
